New Kidney: Day 4

The Catheter is out!! (There’s a celebration in itself.)  Wes went for a Catheter free walk this morning.  Dr Ramirez, the surgeon, told Wes his creatinine level is up to 7.7.  They are not alarmed as much as we are.  Dr. Sing, the neuphrologist, is trying to hold off dialysis for one more day. Wes also met with his kidney coordinator who went over all that he needs to know once he is discharged ie. schedules for doctor visits, medication, when to call emergency, etc. He also had a number of visitors stop by early this afternoon but Wes was asleep.   One surprise visit is his brother Stephan who drove down from Massachusetts and arrived around noon.

Wes is feeling worse than yesterday.  He has been sleeping/resting all afternoon. He spoke to Dr Frank, Stephan’s transplant surgeon from last year, who says it could be a myriad of things, the fact that he hasn’t had dialysis in 4 days and/or the fact that they have started him on new medicines. He has been urinating well and it is currently cranberry colored.  Not too alarming other than the fact that he is on blood thinner, so they want to make sure that it begins to change to the normal color soon.

Dr. Ramirez stopped in again later in the afternoon and informed us all that his creatinine level was 7.7 at the 1:00am lab but at 4:00am they took blood again and his creatinine level was at 7.4.  He believes that the drop in creatinine is the reason they are holding off dialysis.  It looks like the kidney could be waking up.  We were very excited to hear this news.

Wes has been getting a lot of rest. He is not in much pain and is able to get around fairly well.  The current feeling of “crap”(in his terms) causes us to have questions but after hearing the Doctors reports we are hopeful that this will most likely pass.

PS – Because of the blood thinner and the fact that Wes’ case is “different”  and they can’t figure out why his last kidney failed, they may keep him here for 4-5 more days to keep a close eye on him.

  4. You don’t know us, but I wanted to let you know that we have been following your blog for about a year now. We have been praying for you, and are praying now that God would breath life into that new kidney. Praying for strength and peace for all of you.

  5. Wes,
we are praying hard for you everyday!! We miss you! Get well!!

  6. I think that’s a GREAT idea…I am sure that it’s hard for Wes to stay in the hospital but because of what happened last time it’s probably a good idea if they keep him there a little longer and monitor everything! PRAYING for the levels to come down…7.7…7.4 anybody give me a 6.4 do I hear a 5.4….keep those numbers getting lower. Sorry tried to sound like an auctioneer not sure it worked.

Love you guys!! Can’t wait to see you this weekend!!

  7. Just caught up with the news of those past few days. Waiting for that creatinine to go down! Go, go, go! God is good! Btw, CTMP also had a baptism service yesterday, what a coincidence. Always in prayer,

  8. That is very good new to hear about the creatinine levels going down even if it is a big slowly. Will continue to pray that the level continue to go down more each time they take blood until it is at an acceptable level.
I am glad the doctors don’t want to send Wes home too soon after what happened last year. We don’t want Wes have to go back to the hospital with another emergency. I am praying that this kidney will be just the one the Lord wanted for him.

  9. Wes- LOVE it that you were able to see the baptisms on Sunday. Technology is so cool! Thankful that the foley is out and that your creatinine levels started to come down. We pray that this continues.

  10. Praise the Lord for those baby steps in progress. Sorry you feel like crap, but hopeful things will improve a little each day. Praying regularly for you.

    Hugs,
    Trish

  11. I almost hope that Wes can stay a few more days to get the rest he needs… and allow his kidney to wake up without being moved around so much. Seems like they send people home to soon these days anyway!
Get them to wait on you hand and foot Wes! You deserve a break from work for a little while to rejuvenate. 🙂
    God Bless your sweet heart.
