Yesterday Wes was admitted because of vomiting and his levels were elevated showing stress on the kidneys. They took Wes to get an X-Ray, an Ultra Sound, and a MRA(V?). The results were there was not enough blood flow to or from the kidney. The consensus was that they would have to re operate through the same incision and see if they could alleviate the problem and save the kidney.
After 4 hours or so in surgery they were not able to save the kidney. When they went in the kidney was still a little pink. They removed it and ran multiple tests a couple of times to find the cause. At one point when they flushed the kidney with a special solution, it became hard and they checked the major arteries and valves for clots and could not find anything. Finally when they couldn’t find the problem, the doctor took a sample to send to a lab and there he found dried old blood. There were clots forming in the microscopic arteries and veins and will need further testing for the cause. Their best guess is some type of immune reaction. They sent off parts of the kidney and blood work and are expecting results in about a week to 10 days. They don’t guarantee they will find anything but any research may help for their chances of a second transplant with better results in the future.
Wes had a very rough night last night. This has been the most pain that he has endured through the whole process. The pain medicine was not working very quickly and they were unable to keep it under control with the time that they were given between shots. Finally this morning they gave Wes a pump release to manage his own pain. It has made a BIG difference! His biggest pain is in his hip. They will be taking an X-Ray to make sure everything is okay.
His levels are still going up which may mean dialysis before he is out of the hospital. They will continue to monitor his levels and if they don’t level out they will start a plan of action… possibly dialysis. (Nothing has been said officially from the kidney specialists about dialysis)

Hey guys…our prayers are with you. (and a whole bunch of the rest of the Manitoba crew as well).
Praying for you in the Crowe household. I’ve also been sending your updates to friends, our church, Sunday school class and Facebook. 🙂 Jackson (8) and Connor (6) have been praying for you every night, even before the transplant. 🙂
I also have a group praying for you. Wish we could be there for support but know we are there in spirit. Love You all. Aunt Cilla and Uncle John
Wes, all I can think about are the words you said going into your operation. “God is in control”. Yours and Steve story was amazing because of the love God gave you both for each other. The sacrifice that Steve made. I think of your Grandma and how when we were down she would sing the song “Cheer up you saints of God. There’s nothing to worry about. Nothing to make you feel afraid, nothing to make you doubt.” It must be so hard for you to understand. God is using this in a miraculous way. Many are praying. Praying for relief of your pain. Love you!
Our Prayer and thoughts are with you and your entire family. Love you guys
Our Prayers are with you and your family
Praying for a pain free restful night for you Wes!
Love you!
I am a friend of Craig and Celeste. I was in their wedding with you Wes. I recently heard of your story and wanted to let you know I am praying for you and your brother and your families. My husband donated a kidney last year to a man from our church. He was born with kidney problems and had his first transplant at 21 years old and last year he was 39 when he received my husbands kidney after the last kidney failed (his mother was the donor then). He spent almost four years on dialysis this last time. He is so healthy now. God brought us all together in a miraculous way and led my husband to donate. I tell you this to help you not to get so discouraged. God has a plan. You have all been on my heart for many days now and I will keep praying.
Wes, Karen, and Fam: Thanks for all of your timely updates and Twitters. There’s nothing I can really add to the multitude of comments here. From class in med school, we have learned just how tough a transplant can be, even without unforeseen consequences. This can’t be easy for Wes or any of you. You guys are continually in my prayers. In His Love, Nelson (from CT Morris)
Coddington Family
We are praying for all of you. Wes, that you may be given comfort both in your body and mind. Karen for strength to continue the many hours of taking care of your husband and kids, for the young ones that they would see the faith that is so evident in their mom and dad and see the glory of God.
Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. Yard work, food, watching the kids, just let us know, we long to help in any way that you need.
We’re in this with you with our prayers and thoughts. This includes the rest of the fam – Tom, Karen, Pete and their families as well.
We have you and your parents on our minds constantly.
-Pam and Bob
